Pentagon Investigation Concludes Hegseth Put Troops in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached departmental policies by disclosing classified intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Event

The online conversation in question included details about a scheduled airstrike in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a member.

Other officials in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The inspector general's report found that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and posed a risk to the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Response

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his statement, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have risked lives or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The finalized investigation has been shared with lawmakers. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be made public later this week.
