Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant honors show draws close, one notices an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences globally and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
