Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed view of Europe. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective rests on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Growth Gap Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about 50% of the world’s top fifty tech companies are US-based, while only four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity prompts a vital issue: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of major factors account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic network for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of hundreds of millions. The EU, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Grounds for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: high-quality workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations could trigger a new wave of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in developing next-generation tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
