The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Athletes will gain the ability to challenge particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step follows just a season following the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
A recent example took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Other Changes
A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
